    Jargon Buster - B Breakout IP --- Breakout IPs are usually found where a network has a single point of egress/ingress to the public internet. The benefit of this is a reduced attack surface, improved visibility of network usage and overall administration. This however introduces a bottleneck into the network. Bandwidth --- Essentially, bandwidth is the term used to describe the maximum capacity of the circuit and ultimately determines the usable throughput. Bandwidth usually is presented using bit rates, such as below: ​ bps // Kbps // Mbps // Gbps BGP Border Gateway Protocol BGP is a layer 3 routing protocol that establishes neighbour relationships with external networks or autonomous systems. BGP can be configured to share prefix lists which contain information about what networks are sat behind each neighbour. BSSID Basic Service Set Identifier The BSSID is essentially the MAC address of the wireless access point (AP). Broadcast --- Broadcast packets are packets designed to flood a network mostly for the purpose of network discovery. Switches will forward broadcast packets out of all ports. It's important to avoid switching loops as a broadcast storm can ensue. The broadcast IP of a network is used, along with a broadcast MAC address ( FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF ). BRAS Broadband Remote Access Server The BRAS allows for aggregation of DSL user sessions into a single point, which can then be forwarded to the ISP for further routing. It sits sin-between the ISP and the carrier networks. BDPU Bridge Data Protocol Unit The BDPU is used within a redundant LAN, to ensure that STP works correctly. It contains information such as switch ID, switch port cots, MAC addresses etc. BDPUs are forwarded to a multicast address to avoid flooding the network. BDPUs are forwarded every 2 seconds as standard. Broadband --- Used to define a number of technologies that allow data transmission across large distances. Typical broadband technologies are: DSL/ADSL // Wireless // Fibre Optic // Satellite BNG Broadband Network Gateway The BNG is another name for a BRAS. It's usually called the BNG on the ISP side, and a BRAS on the carrier side however.
